Consisting of five sections which slide out individually, this bookcase accommodates books in the resulting voids as the user accumulates them. In short, it 'grows' with your collection!

BOOKSHELF DESIGN BY CITY DESK STUDIO

Transforming the idea of a traditional library ladder, City Desk Studio integrated a sliding stair into this bookshelf design, making it a decorative element in the overall structural composition. Powder coated cobalt blue, the stair is broken into two sections that move independently depending on how high one needs to reach. Stairs, unlike a ladder, allow a user to have both hands free when looking for a particular item while keeping the floor free and unobstructed.

4X AND XYZ BY ATILLA KUZU

I learnt of Turkish designer Atilla Kuzu today (via Frame) and picked out these 2 notable works of his.

Formed simply with 16x30mm wood strips, where the spaces between each can be used for storing magazines and CDs, the 4X coffee table is stylish without a doubt. The form seems to defy gravity!

XYZ's Islamic-inspired design might be a tad overwhelming, but look beyond that and you'll see a modular unit which offers lots of color possibilities and flexibility of use. Modules can be added on easily to accomodate the user's needs.

Voronoi Bookshelf

The Voronoi Bookshelf by Marc Newson is made from a single slab of white carrara marble. The organic shape gives the eye a welcome break from the monotony of rectangular shelving. Owning a unit like this would force you to look at your personal objects in a whole new way as you hunted for the right alcove in which to put them. This is a fantastic piece of design that will no doubt have lasting appeal. I have no idea how this would make it into the average home, but perhaps Newson liked the irony of using a totally impractical material for such a banal piece of household furniture. A shelving unit turned into glorious sculpture! I would not be surprised if it is reproduced in a more practical material in the future. Read More..
