Vote for a Lighthouse

Jeld-Wen is continuing it's Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative this year with a selection of 12 lighthouses to choose from on it's website. The contest was designed to prove the reliability of their windows and doors — even in coastal climates — by helping to save historic lighthouses for local communities. This is the fourth year for the contest, the first three winners (before and after pictures below) are the Wind Point Lighthouse in Wisconsin, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse in Maryland, and the Umpqua River Lighthouse in Oregon. Vote for your favorite lighthouse in your home state, or favorite vacation lighthouse here. Of course we were excited to vote for The Grand Traverse Lighthouse right here in Michigan!

Builders Show 2008 - Tradewinds Home

In keeping with the theme of our last post on the Green Builder VISION House - the Tradewinds home also utilized the concept on interior windows to allow maxium natural light inside the home.
The bedrooms have small interior windows above the beds to allow light to filter into the bathrooms behind. The desk tucked behind a staircase in the office has interior windows providing a view into the entryway and kitchen while letting in light from the windows on the third story and from windows all the way across the home in the living area.

Even in the hallways and pathways, there is little need for electric lighting until darkness falls - light trickles in from all corners of the home.

Student Design Contest - Jeld-Wen Doors

Jeld-Wen Doors and Windows sponsors "Follow the Line" - a contest searching for doors that put a contemporary twist on a traditional design or draw from contemporary inspiration. Contestants may be inspired by the past, present or future, as long as the design is a functioning door that could be installed in a home today. Deadline for this year's contest - February 29, 2008

2007 Winners:

Anna McCorvey was influences by Belgian architect Victor Horta when she designed her winning radius top door with asymmetrical transom.

Nathan Williams looked to Frank Lloyd Wright to inspire his door with individual panels that allow the homeowner to let light and air circulate into the home.
