Mid-Century Modern Inspired - MASH Studios LAX Series

We're seeing an increase of mid-century modern design influences on today's furniture and home design. The pieces in the MASH Studios LAX series borrows from that design period, using solid walnut wood and a natural oil finished aluminum in their construction. The platform bed and wall mounted desk are space saving and minimalistic with just a touch of mid-century modern design softening the lines. Currently available for pre-order, the dining set has more of a mid-century modern flair, especially the chairs. More detailed pictures of the pieces and construction of the furniture are available at the LAX series site.

Modern Storage - The Rising Glen Residence

Recently remodeled by Janna Levenstein, The Rising Glen Residence is a mid-century-modern home tucked in the hills of West Hollywood, California. The 4-bedroom home is a marvel of clean lines, warm woods complimenting cool materials and lovely wide open spaces. We are particular to the innovative storage and wall panel systems the designer used to contain the owner's belongings without disturbing the space. More pictures via: Contemporist

Where retro meets modern - Kitchen by Isabelle Halling

We love this kitchen, it's a little bit retro, a little bit modern and a dash of Swedish country. There's nothing like a mash-up of design styles to make a place feel warm and inviting! The exposed wood beams are wonderful and we really enjoy the idea of a great, big kitchen island on giant caster wheels. Somehow the modern concrete counter tops, the rustic flooring and the delicate hand painted touches on the cabinetry work together just right...

Reclaimed Wood Veneers - B + N

These reclaimed-wood veneers glued to an MDF substrate are easy-to-install panels ideal for retail settings, hotel interiors and home space division applications. The veneer and substrate are FSC certified, and B+N uses low-VOC varnishes and water-based glues that don’t contain formaldehyde. The panels can be sawn, nailed, glued, and outfitted with shelving hardware.

Last year, B+N decided to introduce their reclaimed-wood version of the panels, Iconic Panels, using lumber salvaged from olive-barrel staves, razed gym bleachers, and blighted buildings. The beautiful, deep grains are so stunning and the different laser cut designs are great for many different design and trend preferences. via: Metropolis Mag

The Beauty of Natural Wood - River Mirrors

The beauty of natural wood with it's intricate grains and knots and waved edges forming a one-of-a-kind framing for these mirrors is innovative. Both artwork and functional decor, the River Mirrors by Caryn Moberly make a dramatic statement - especially when reflecting the greenery of nature right outside.

Exposed Wood Framing: The V House

After yesterday's post on the Metamorfsis 1 home in Chile, we stumbled across the VHouse in Los Angeles that really seems as if it belongs in that same category of homes with unique, natural wood exteriors. The exposed wood framing of the VHouse wrapping from the exterior to the interior of the home is quite stunning and the use of native redwood planking help the home to fit comfortably in its California surroundings. Adjacent to the open kitchen and bedrooms, the courtyard was planned to be an outdoor living extension of the home.

Remodeling with Excess Timber - Metamorfosis

Maybe we have an itch for warmer weather or we need a vacation? Either way, this remodeling project in Chile turned out breathtaking and we want to go visit - right now! While the pictures will have to do for now, we still feel the Metamorfosis 1 is a gorgeous example of how to use excess timber to create a home that reflects its natural and rugged surroundings. The ventilated timber "skin" exterior prevents collection of moisture and water in the structure wall. via: Freshome

Cologne IMM: Reclaimed Wood by Anteak

We have written many a post in the past all on reclaimed woods. Floors, walls, doors, furniture, counter tops - you name it we find that home construction and product design has such a unique flair when using reclaimed woods. Our trip to Cologne IMM didn't disappoint and we found Anteak using reclaimed woods to create unique textures and patterns using repurposed woods. Our favorite had to be the coffee table using different colors and planking to create a one of a kind look. When paired with the elegant gray chairs the reclaimed wood dining table had a rustic / elegant look, don't you think?

Meuble at Maison Objet: Pierre Cayron

Meuble at Le Bourget is a dedicated furniture fair that is part of the Maison Objet Show featuring unique furniture designs and applications. One of our favorite finds at this small venue was Pierre Cayron's pieces done in a beautiful brushed, dovetailed oak. The dining set and matching armoire had interesting built-in features such as a self-storing ladder and storage underneath all of the dining chairs. Cayron is committed to making all his furniture locally, in Avignon, France. Beautiful!

Cologne IMM: Sustainable Wood

So here's an interesting story... We traveled all the way to Germany to the Cologne IMM furniture fair to find a furniture maker that is helping to repurpose wood that we discard here in the USA. Hartmann takes gum wood hearts that we might disregard as unusable here in our country and they turn it into this exotic and beautiful application for cabinetry and furniture. We love the modern, horizontal grains and the sustainable application of reusing discarded materials to create something so unique and exotic!

A Source for Reclaimed Wood

We have discussed reclaimed woods not once, not twice, but a whole bunch of times. You can visit our most recent post on the subject for a recap on all the different ways to use reclaimed woods in the home. So, if we have convinced you to buy some, use some or you just want to know more, here is a great source to locate many types of the sustainable material. The company TerraMai is a one-stop source for reclaimed woods.

They utilize railway ties, warehouses, mills, barns, wine barrels, tanks and any other previously used wood that may be salvageable to provide unique reclaimed wood products. TerraMai only purchases structures slated for demolition, and whenever feasible, the woods they reclaim are re-milled as close to the source as possible. According to the company, they was the world's first reclaimed wood company to have all of its products FSC certified. The products include flooring, siding & paneling, decking, beams, lumber and even salvaged columns and doors - visit their site for more information.
