inspired projects: driftwood sculptures

I feel so inspired by readers who share their projects with me. Such is the case of Filiz and Christiane, sculptural artists from Turkey who have graciously shown their driftwood sculptures to all of us. They gather their already worn driftwood from the beaches of Alanya and assemble the most wonderful artwork. Their blog Yalos or 'driftwood' has many more fabulous creations. I am glad like-minded artists find my blog and resonate with it, and thankful for the community that blogs can offer-they enrich us all.

The three week event stretching from Bondi to Tamarama along the coastal walk, it is Australia's largest annual outdoor free to the public exhibition of sculpture.---featuring over 100 sculptures from 18 different countries. Below are Broken Family by Anthony Haywood, an elephant made from TV's and other household waste and Anemone by Tim Ferrier a geometric form made with discarded street signs.

paintings on smashed cans: found object art

Using trash to paint on is kind of a fun idea for found object art, especially when it is nice and funky street art. Rik Catlow (top pic) has a bit of a how to for the smashed can paintings here. And I love the pink art on smashed spray paint cans by Buff Monster (bottom pic).

Also a fun idea for kids, it lets them think out of the box in regards to raw materials for their art. A kids page here.

plastic beach junk art: fran crowe

Plastic trash from Suffolk beaches exhibited by artist Fran Crowe at A Fly in the Face. She vowed to save one square mile of ocean for a year by collecting 46000 pieces of litter walking on the beaches near her home. Every time she went out, she took carrier bags and picked up all the litter she could carry. Crowe raised nearly $2000 for the Marine Conservation Society through sponsorship and sale of her unique seaside ‘souvenirs’. She encourages people to join the Marine Conservation Society's Coastal Challenge or do a local river or beach clean-up, such as Beachwatch.

In one year Crowe walked over 200kms and carried away nearly a third of a ton of plastic trash.

Portia Munson is a visual artist living in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Her shocking installations are comprised of found plastic detrius, a departure from her natural setting. She works in a variety of media including installation, painting, photography and sculpture. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US, Canada and Europe in such venues as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland; the Kunstahallen Brandts Klaedefabrik, Odensec, Denmark; and in NYC at the New Museum, Ace Gallery, Exit Art, and DC Moore Gallery.
