Spotted at Apartment Therapy - Recycled Car Hoods, Hidden Televisions & A Dog

We're running around like crazy here at the office today, so our posting schedule is a bit off. However, we wanted to share a couple of things we enjoyed over at AT today.

These very unique recycled car hood tables from Re-Nest are created by Dallas Welder Joel Hester. He turns the colorful and rusty hoods of junkyard cars into industrial tables with a shine and finish unique to vintage metals.

Not everyone oohs and ahhs over big, flat screen TV technology. There are some who prefer to hide their gadget and gizmos, or at least have them blend into the design aesthetic of the room. Here's how designer Kelly Geisen created a great storage solution for her electronic gadgetry.

And, this picture was just darn cute. We had to post it, but if you're up for a challenge, see if you can identify the mod textile pattern design.

The Sushi Collection - Moroso

Debuting in Miami tomorrow, The Sushi Collection for Moroso is a special combination of different design elements created by designer Edward van Vliet. The collection unites simple, clean lines with exquisite patchwork embroidery, evocative of Japanese or Moroccan moods, and embroidered, ultra-modern geometric patterns. Maison Objet: Stripes are back in a big way

This year it was all about updating the basics, which meant that stripes were back and they were dressed up and ready to party! Bold, wide stripes, unique color combinations, patterns within stripes and even stripes on walls - stripes made a comeback in a big way and we like it! Here are some of our favorites:

We're pretty sure THG wanted us to look at this great shower faucet, but we couldn't take our eyes off of this great striped application for the walls:

These funky, pattern within stripes applications of design on this classic sofa from Lelievre really mixes it up and creates a whole new look:

The mixing of skinny stripes with wide, bold stripes and blocks of color is fresh when combined with touches of exotic patternwork from the French textile company, Jalla:

Menswear stripes get updated at Kenzo with the application of milk chocolate browns with splashes of ultra-feminine pinks:

Bright and vivid colors on this classic stripe from Etro invigorates the basic sofa and accessories:

Chesterfield makeover

Georgia wrote looking for some inspiration for a project: "I have inherited and begun to restore a lovely old chesterfield couch belonging to a recently deceased great uncle. It's a labour of love and I want to love it and pass it on after me. Do you have any images of restored chesterfields? I think I want to step away from that men's club vibe and modernise it somehow with the covering... any input would be amazing. I think I'm heading away from tufting though, in an effort to modernise and simplify (the upholsterer gave me the biggest smile when i decided this, less work for him). I'm not having much luck locating images of nice revamped chesterfields (leather or otherwise) without the tufting... do you know of any?"

Now I don't have a photo of Georgia's chesterfield, but the photo below is what I always envision when I hear the word chesterfield. Leather, black (or brown) with thick rounded arms and lots of tufting in the back.

I was a bit disappointed I've got to say that she may forgo the tufting, because I think the tufting is the best part, but if it means keeping your upholsterer happy and your wallet a bit thicker... Anyway, it was difficult finding photos pf chesterfields without tufting, so below I've included a wide variety of photos to inspire Georgia. Some aren't quite chesterfields but they have fabulous upholstery, and some are tufted but you'll just have to imagine the upholstery without the tufting. I am envisioning velvet, maybe charcoal grey for it's versatility since this is going to be a piece passed along. I do have to say that the first one below has to be one of the most incredible chesterfield-like sofas I've ever seen. I'm not sure about the lavender but the unfinished style is totally knock-your-socks-off drop-dead gorgeous.

Color for the Sensory Deprived

Today is our last post on products, marketing, architecture and technology for the sensory deprived. Our final post includes some great ways color can appeal to sight and touch from the Heimtextil 2009 show and a few other innovations that are making color a more sensory experience.

Our visit to the trend hall at Heimtex was certainly a feast for the senses! We love this dimensional floral fabric in stunning sunshine yellow from Jeel.

This shaggy, deconstructed textile from AS Creation is a perfect trend / counter trend to it's pattern partner, an elegant tone on tone circle motif in shades of lavender.

Artecnica is launching 7 new collections in 2009, one of which is this interestingly colored and laser cut "Bright Times" from Studio Tord Boontje. Bright Times is a collection of tea light candleholders that pack flat and then pop out to reveal doily-like styles that cast intricate shadows. This wraps sensory week here on the blog, but make sure to join us next week for more from Heimtextil as well as a special week of coverage dedicated to "Recapturing Americana" in honor of the historic inauguration. We will be covering how red, white and blue is experiencing a resurgence, the return to handmade in America and reclaimed & authentic materials that are quickly becoming the must-have item for decor and construction materials.

Heimtextil 2009: Exotic Boho Chic

In our trend forecasts and publications this past season we've been reporting on a brighter, more enthusiastic trend we've called Boho Chic. We were pleased to see this trend taking on new direction with an exotic twist at this year's Heimtextil show.

These textiles from Mridul combine bright splashes of vivid aqua, apple green, smooth chocolate with touches of raspberry and tangerine to create an eclectic bohemian feeling out of exotic patterns.

Touching in it's Turkish roots the company ZorluTeks Tekstil featured this eye-catching bedding ensemble that combined bright color, ethnic prints and a coordinated / decoordinated styling that was pure Bohemian.

Heimtexil 2009: Construction Reconstruction

Our coverage of our very first tradeshow of 2009 - Heimtextil - begins today straight from snowy and blustery cold Frankfurt, Germany. Full of fabrics, textures, colors and dynamic trend statements, it's a perfect way to start a new year.

The first overall statement we're pulling out of the show is construction/reconstruction; taking something apart and reformulating it in a new more complex way. We anticipate seeing this trend across many shows this year as many designers create designs and art through the useful repurposing of many materials.
