ROOM RESCUE

Adding a study area into a room meant for sleeping is not easy - especially so when the room is tiny. In this example, the home owner wants to create a space-saving resting cum study area for her daughter, an undergraduate. The latter requested for a simple but functional design.

To free up space, I propose to line the new study table and book storage cabinets against one wall. This would also function well as a nice backdrop for the existing bed. Plenty of books can be stored within the recessed areas behind sliding doors. Reflective materials like glass and mirror would help enhance the feel of space within.

classic wooden interior design

classic wooden interior design,modern,house,design
classic wooden interior design, upload feito originalmente por stan.stauffer.

When sketching your floor plan, do not forget to calculate in the wall thicknesses. A basic rule of thumb is 4” for interior walls and 6” for exterior walls. Actual construction drawings will vary a little, but those numbers will keep you on track for now. Some of the Home designer's sketches that showed room interior measurements which totaled the overall width of the exterior of their home, this design problem is often ended up redesigning the floor plan because those rooms to be a certain size on the inside. So be very calculative while sketching the floor plan for your home design. www.larryshomedesigns.com

ROOM RESCUE

Original bedroom

Proposed design for new girls' bedroom

The owner wanted to convert an empty room into a bedroom for her 2 children to rest. The original room is small and sparsely furnished.

By building up a raised timber deck, the newly carved-out area by the window becomes a cozy sleeping 'pod' for the kids. The back windows - which are not centralized to the wall - can be lined up with a combination of full height black-out curtains (at the sides) and a beautiful roller blind (in the middle). The symmetrical layout brings order to the room and is more pleasing to the eye.

ROOM RESCUE

Proposed design for 3rd storey

Room Rescue debuts!

A young couple wanted to create a 'home within a home' for both of them. It was proposed to convert the top storey of the 3-storey house into a livable space for two while the existing ceiling was removed to reveal an attic area which can be used for resting purposes.

Original bedroom 2 on 3rd storey

Original stairway corridor on 3rd storey

Entrance to original master bedroom on 3rd storey

Original master bedroom on 3rd storey

In the living area (on the 3rd storey), the owners seek an "open and spacious Manhattan-inspired lofty space" which would accommodate their daily functions like studying and entertainment. All original internal walls on this floor will be removed to achieve a sense of space.
Proposed layout

Proposed design for TV area on 3rd storey

Finishes like cultured stone, marble, dark-stained timber and high gloss laminates can be incorporated into the space to achieve a contemporary yet 'visually stimulating' look. A water feature installed below the newly created staircase leading to the attic space can also enhance the visual effect with water and lighting play.

I propose to locate the study + working area to one corner of the space, with a storage cabinet overhanging the floor to act as a partition for privacy (which will not take up any floor space). The cabinet is under lit to provide illumination for reading purposes.

Proposed design for study area on 3rd storey

On the attic level, the parapet wall against which the super king-sized bed lies is finished in a cultured stone material. The area opposite the bed can be utilized as a walk-in closet, seperated by tinted glass doors.

HOME REJUVENATED!

The owner seeks a new look for his tired looking living and dining rooms. By making use of his existing classical furniture, I seek to create the ultimate gentleman's pad. I also played with the layout of these old pieces and added matching new ones (like the 2 armchairs and glass coffee table) to achieve a cohesive look here.

Lush fabrics and rugs, accent lamps and wallpapers made up the arsenal of rejuvenation tools. The space below the staircase leading to the 2nd storey has been recreated into a storage cum display area to showcase the owner's sculpture and antique collection.

Elsewhere, subtle accessorizing completes the redesign. The end result is a cozy space for relaxing and entertaining.

Manhattan House Architecture

Manhattan House is one of the most influential pieces of architecture from the city's mid-century period. Inspired by Le Corbusier, the father of Modernist architecture, Manhattan House was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the internationally renowned architecture firm responsible for the Time Warner Center, the St. Regis Hotel and Residences and the Lever House. The first master architect Gorden Bunshaft, was lead designer as well as a resident. His building was honored with landmark status in 2007, and was recently designated as the host site for the 2008 Kips Bay Decorator Show House, the premier design exposition in North America. 1927-1928; Walker & Eisen
617 S. Olive, Los Angeles
Originally the home of the haberdashery, "Alexander & Oviatt". At the very top is a bungalow penthouse built by Mr. Oviatt for his personal use. On the Art Deco Walking Tour (L.A. Conservency), we were lucky enough to get a tour of the penthouse.
James Oviatt attended the famous 1925 Paris Exposition and was so taken by the new look that he decided to have his building back in L.A. built in the Moderne style. He hired french designer Rene Lalique for his largest commission ever. The lobby forecourt along contained 30 tons of Lalique glass!! The elevator doors and mailbox were also designed by him as well as the windows in the penthouse.

Polycarbonate strips are 'stitched' into the angled, tilted, wall that slices through the small structure, dividing it into zones. As the wall passes through the building it carves a path of narrow openings that have been glazed to allow light to bounce into the rooms.
