Greening the Bar

The Oulu Bar & EcoLounge in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood makes a great statement as you approach with it's green living exterior facade - the borough's first living wall installation.

Architect Evangeline Dennie designed this LEED Gold certified 2,500 sq. ft. building using green components including sheetrock walls made of post-industrial recycled material and post-consumer recycled paper; birch logs brought in from a private forest in Pennsylvania; biodegradable ceramic tile on the walls and water-based grout sealer in the bathrooms; natural Mica panels promoting light exchange; low-VOC paint with a milk-based pigment; and a garage door providing natural ventilation. Personally, from a design standpoint we love the "peeling wall" made of wood paneling and the bar height tables flowing down from the walls.
