Metal Shutter Houses

Manhattan's West Side recently experienced a design update with Shigeru Ban's Metal Shutter Houses opening on 19th Street. The nine duplexes are completely encased in perforated metal shutters that operate just like the rolling grates of the art galleries and delis that inspired them. The shutters can be raised, exposing the entire space to the elements and with the addition of a 20-foot pivoting window wall, the residents can experience the outdoors without leaving their home.
