It's hot, muggy and 90 degrees here in the Great Lakes region and those of us in Michigan are getting summer-fever! The month of May can bring us 50 degree chills with rain or days like today that make us here at Sphere Trending want to sneak out of the office early so we can work or play out of doors. Today's posts are all about our desire for a long and enjoyable summer season...
We often talk of being authentic and getting back to our heritage and the growing trend of heirloom gardening is just an outdoor extension of that fact. Heirloom tomatoes are becoming a hot trend for the home gardener and that certain species of plant dating back to the 18th century can be the crown jewel in the backyard garden. Tomatoes in deep purple, peach shades with actual fuzz, rosy blushed tones and those with variegated colors and stripes are being grown in backyards across the country. So, put back those Beefsteak and cherry varieties and plant a Green Zebra, Cherokee Purple or Big Rainbow tomato and see what just might surprise you in your garden this year. Try Gary Ibsen's Tomato Fest site to pick up a few certified organic seeds and try this trend out first-hand.
