haute nature: travel guide to denver

A reader asked me a few days ago for my advice for a travel guide to Denver.
I obliged and sent her a list of my favorite haunts and discoveries, hope you all enjoy it also!

FOR MUSIC:
Twist & Shout
A great music store with new and used vinyl and cd's, dvd's, etc.
Twist & Shout

and there is the Tattered Cover (independently owned great bookstore) next door to Twist & Shout (it has two locations)

Perhaps you could catch a live music show at the Paramount, Gothic, Bluebird, or the Fillmore.
Fillmore Auditorium
Gothic Theatre
Paramount Theatre
Blue Bird Theatre

ARTS & CRAFTS:
First Friday Openings in the Sante Fe district of Denver are good for gallery shows.

I also like the lower downtown area of Denver (LODO) --tons of new buildings/renovations.
There you will find another Tattered Cover location, great restaurants, and the Modern Art Museum of Denver.

Tattered Cover Bookstore

ART MUSEUMS:
The main art museum was originally designed by Gio Ponti with the new addition designed by Daniel Liebskind
Denver Art Museum

do not miss the Vance Kirkland Museum--trust me. Mod decorative arts galore!
Vance Kirkland

South Broadway street has lots of antiques too if you like that sort of thing.

RESTAURANTS:
I am vegetarian, so I love the
Watercourse Foods --near the Kirland Museum

Mercury Cafe --near LODO by car (sometimes have live music ala Vox Feminista, etc...
Cafe Brazil --need reservation
Domo Restaurant --near LODO by car

if you like seafood:
Sushi Den --South Broadway area
Jax Fish House --in LODO

FOR CHILDREN:
Stylelicious Kids
Cherry Creek area--also a huge mall there--might want to avoid that. But Cherry Creek has cute boutiques on their street area.

also an Oilily there in Cherry Creek
3000 E 3rd Ave # 14, Denver

sounds funny but a trip to REI by the river front in Denver is spectacular (close to LODO) the building used to be a railroad repair building--its stunning interior is vaulted and cavernous. There is a Starbucks inside--the whole building is strangely worth a visit.

Real Baby
this shop is in an area called Highlands--also another cute street.

Denver has an aquarium which is great for kids as well as a the Denver Botanical Garden, most excellent in the summer time with concerts--but they do have a tropical indoor area that is nice for the winter months.

I hope this helps if you are planning a visit to Denver.
if you have any other suggestions, please comment.
