A friend who's not a design professional asked me what's exactly 'less is more', and I thought I should just point her to this post. Leaving only every necessary elements and combining them together in a harmonious manner is key to every successful design. Complex design is hardly useful - except to show people it's complex in the first place.
Instead, a design should be functional and straightforward. Achieving that is complexity in itself already, just in case one haven't realize.
