Free Rice

It's July 4th holiday week and many of you may be on vacation. For those working (like us!) and looking for a way to give back a little to celebrate the independence of our country, how about helping a third world country gain a little independence from hunger?

FreeRice - be careful, it's addicting! - is a great site that is devoted to two "free" goals:

1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

Simply visit the website and challenge yourself to see how many vocabulary words you know and for each correct answer FreeRice contributes 20 grains of rice to the UN Food Program. There is also a great video to watch about the FreeRice being distributed to those in need. How does FreeRice manage to give rice for free? It's completely funded by their sponsors - companies and charities such as Unilever, Country Crock and Hunger for Hope.

Instead of surfing the celebrity gossip blogs during your lunch hour, how about strengthening your brain and doing a little good to help end world hunger? It's a great way to feel patriotic on the 4th, without spending a dime! And a little fun fact? Over 38 billion grains of rice have already been donated!
